FAQsWhy did the TGA, NTPGA, and STPGA come together to start this tour? The Legends Junior Tour, created in 2005, has been established under the umbrella of The Texas Golf Association Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization formed in 1999 as part of an initiative to promote the game of golf and all of the personal and social skills the game provides to those who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience all the benefits the game has to offer.
With all the different golf programs around the state, players and parents alike were getting confused as to what junior golf associations were related to the Texas Golf Association, NTPGA, STPGA, and AJGA. By joining forces to form the Legends Junior Tour, a tour has been created that is the place for elite golfers in the state of Texas. How are the PGA Sections’ current Junior Programs related to the Texas Legends Junior Tour? The NTPGA and STPGA offer superb junior golf programs that serve as a stepping stone to the Texas Legends Junior Tour and then to the AJGA. Both the NTPGA and STPGA offer programs for junior golfers of all skill levels. Once a player proves himself / herself at that level they may choose to move on to the most competitive tour in Texas – the Legends Junior Tour. What do the STPGA and NTPGA Junior Golf Programs Offer? - The STPGA Program is divided into two main programs: The Little Linksters and the Junior Tour.
STPGA Little Linksters Program
The STPGA Little Linksters Program is an instructional based program that provides youngsters ages 7-12 with an opportunity to learn the game of golf. This program is more than just an instructional clinic that puts golf equipment in the hands of potential junior golfers. It teaches kids to understand golf terminology, rules of golf, golf etiquette, how to score and how to swing a golf club. During the instruction phase of the program, juniors will take their new found skills on the course on two different occasions by playing 5-holes from modified tees.
Once juniors complete the instructional phase of the program, they have the opportunity to play in as many as two events per week during June and July. These events are well organized with published tee-times and modified rules to insure that the on-course experience is not discouraging. Juniors will move from the 5-hole modified tees to the 9-hole modified tees division as their scores improve. It takes two scores within published scoring brackets to be moved from one division to the next. Juniors are moved on a weekly basis and are continuously challenged. The divisions are as follows:
- Co-ed 7-9 5-hole modified tees
- Co-ed 7-9 9-hole modified tees
- Boys 10-12 5-hole modified tees
- Girls 10-12 5-hole modified tees
- Boys 10-12 9-hole modified tees
- Girls 10-12 9-hole modified tees
- Boys 10-12 9-hole red tees
- Girls 10-12 9-hole red tees
STPGA Junior Tour
The STPGA Junior Tour consists of competitive one- and two-day weekly tournaments throughout June and July in Austin, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Houston, Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio. It is open to STPGA Junior Members who are ages 12-18. All first year members must pass a skills test prior to participating in tournaments.
Juniors earn points in each tournament based on performance. The points list is used to determine the invitees to the 6 Area Championships as well as season ending Tour Championship.
Age Divisions are as follows: Girls 12-14, Girls 15-18, Boys 12-13, Boys 14-15, Boys 16-18.
- The NTPGA Program is divided into four main programs: Instructional Tour, Prep Tour, Medalist Tour, and Masters Tour:
Instructional Tour
The Metro Instructional Tour is for members ages 7-18 and offers a eight-week progressive schedule designed to teach the fundamentals of the game, rules and etiquette. The Instructional Tour is for beginning golfers and those that play on the Prep and Medalist Tours seeking affordable group instruction.
Prep Tour
The Metro Prep Tour is for members ages 7-18 with beginning level experience, offers 9-hole individual stroke play competitions.
Medalist Tour
The Metro Medalist Tour is for members ages 12-18 with average tournament experience, offers 18-hole individual stroke-play competition.
Masters Tour
The Metro Masters Tour is for members ages 12-18 with moderate to high level of tournament experience and ability, offers 18-hole individual stroke-play competitions.
What is the dividing geographic line for the Northern and Southern PGA Sections? The 31st Parallel that runs through Salado, TX is the dividing line. Junior players North of this line will join the NTPGA while those south of the line will join the STPGA. I’m not sure what level my son / daughter is at. Which program should I send him / her to?With no competitive golf experience, a player should look at the Prep and Little Linkster programs offered by the PGA Sections first. Those with some experience should look at the NTPGA Medalist Tour and STPGA Junior Tour and continue to play in those events in order to build the experience and confidence necessary to play on the Texas Legends Junior Tour. Many NTPGA Masters Tour players play on the Texas Legends Tour as well. Legends Junior Tour players are the most competitive and highly skilled in Texas. Players on this tour typically play in national AJGA events in addition to the Legends Tour Schedule. Do I belong to all three programs if I sign up for membership with one?No, players will have to join the Legends Junior Tour and his/her respective PGA section separately. Why are there separate membership fees for the NTPGA / STPGA and the Legends Junior Tour? There are separate membership fees because each organization is a separate entity. Each offers a fantastic program for junior golf, but each offers a different product. The PGA Sections offer a thorough summer schedule as well as some stand alone Spring and Winter events for all junior golfers, while the TLJT offers a comprehensive year-long tour for the highest level of junior golfers in Texas. |
