Barth Uses Near Perfect Round To Earn First Career Tour Win
Bransburg Also Earns First LJT Victory
MONTGOMERY, TX – Through his play during the final round of the Legends Junior Tour Space City Classic, Matthew Barth of The Woodlands showed the day belonged to him. Barth took a commanding lead that he would not relinquish after a sizzling front nine four under-par 32 and a final round 69 to earn a three stroke victory. Marissa Bransburg fended off Cheyenne Knight and Robyn Daniel to earn her first Legends Tour victory. Bransburg shot 78 on Tuesday, three shots clear of Cheyenne Knight (who was also crowned the 14 & Under Champion), and four shot clear of Girls 15-18 Division Runner-Up Daniel.
Barth started his final round tied for the lead with Tour veteran Collin Frizzell and two shots clear of Michael Upp, who joined the duo in the final pairing. Barth birdied both #2 and #3, but couldn't shake Frizell, who made a birdie of his own on #3 to stay one stroke back. Despite Frizzell making par on #4 through #9, Barth extended his lead to three after making birdies on #6 and #8. Frizell cut the lead back to two with a birdie on #11. That's as close to the lead as Frizzell would get, as three bogies on the next five holes effectively ended his hopes at winning. Barth still had not made a bogey on the day until he reached the 17th hole. With a comfortable lead, Barth three putted the 17th for the second straight day for the lone bogey on his card. “I don't know what it is with that green, it always gets me, but I was really happy with how I played,” said Barth after being awarded the Champions trophy and headcover. Frizzell would finish at even par for the day and won Runner Up honors. Frizzell was gracious in defeat, stating about Barth “He played a near perfect round of golf today, you just have to tip your cap to that.”
Marrisa Bransburg led the Girls 15-18 Division by a comfortable four shots over Robyn Daniel going into Tuesday's play. That lead would quickly be extended to six after Daniel bogeyed the first two holes. However, Daniel would rebound with a strong back nine to match Bransburg's final round 78 and finish second four shots back.
It was actually Girls 14 & Under leader Cheyenne Knight that challenged Bransburg's lead on Tuesday (All Girls compete against each other, regardless of Division, for AJGA Exemptions). Knight, playing with Bransburg in the final pairing stayed shot for shot with Bransburg until a double bogey on #7 put her five strokes out of the lead. With Bransburg struggling on the back nine, Knight chipped away at the lead. Bransburg ultimately held strong though to win by three strokes.
Bransburg Grabs Lead After Opening Round
Frizzell, Barth Co-Lead Boys Division
MONTGOMERY, TX – Marissa Bransburg used her home course knowledge at Woodforest GC Monday to grab the lead after the opening round of the Legends Junior Tour Space City Classic. Bransburg , a member of the UIL Champion Montgomery High School girls golf team, played steady golf, making eleven pars and two birdies on her way to a 75 and a two shot lead over Cheyenne Knight. Matthew Barth (The Woodlands) and Colin Frizzell (Nacogdoches) share the lead in the Boys Divison after both shot one over par 73. Like Bransburg in the Girls Division, Barth played consistent golf throughout his round making a bogey and birdie on the front, and responding to his next bogey on #14 by draining a birdie putt on #15. Barth carded his 73 after making bogey on the difficult par 4 17th. Frizzell's final round of 73 was more of a roller coaster ride. Colin got off to a red-hot start, making a string of four birdies on #1, #2, #5, and #7 to get to four under par on his round. After a bogey on #9 and a front nine 33, Frizzell caught a bad break on #10 when his tee shot put him in a awkward stance in the bunker, leading to a forced punch-out and a double bogey. Two more bogies would follow before Frizzell righted the ship with another birdie on #13. Barth and Frizzell lead by two shots over Thomas McGrath and Michael Upp.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 7:30am.
