DALLAS, Texas (Feb. 18, 2013)
- D.J. Godoy, Cole Hammer and Haley Mills easily won their respective divisions at the fifth annual Winter Classic. Godoy's final round 4-under-par-68 was the low round of the tournament.
Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the Winter Classic featured 96 players from Texas, Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Minnesota, Kansas and Louisiana. The par-72 Blue course at Dallas Athletic Club played 6,701 yards for the Boys 15-18 division, 6,149 for the Boys 14 & Under division and 5,782 yards for all girls. Coaches from LSU, North Texas and UT Dallas were in attendance at this Golfweek and JGS ranked event.
On a day that saw wind gusts up to 40mph, D.J. Godoy of Hideaway managed to make four birdies and an eagle en route to an eight shot victory. His back nine 31 included only 12 putts. The win is his first individual victory in the Boys 15-18 division and what he called his biggest win thus far. The 2014 grad earned 12 AJGA performance stars with the win.
Blaine Hale, Jr. of Dallas finished runner-up at his home course while Ben Baxter of Flower Mound, Sam Stevens of Wichita, Kan., and Jose Cervantes of the Jim McLean Junior Academy rounded out the top-5.
Cole Hammer of Houston notched his second straight Boys 14 & Under victory with rounds of 73-73. He finished 11 shots ahead of Whit Parker of Conway, Ark. Hammer, 13, earned one AJGA performance star and another 1,000 Player of the Year points.
Haley Mills, also of the Jim McLean Junior Academy, won the Girls 12-18 division for the second consecutive year. Mills, who will be heading to the University of Kentucky this fall, fired rounds of 76-75 to win by six shots over Maddy Rayner of Southlake. Mills picks up 12 AJGA performance stars with the win.
