Author: D. Prinz
AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 27, 2013) - Philip Barbaree, the only non-Texan in the field, fired a pair of 1-under par 71s to win the fifth annual Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic by two shots over Cody Byford. It was the first Legends Junior Tour victory for the 2017 grad from Shreveport, LA.
The 72 player field featured players from throughout Texas including DFW, Houston, Austin and the panhandle. The par-72 Flintrock Falls course at The Hills CC played 6,782 yards for the Boys 15-18 division, 6,252 for the Boys 14 & Under division and 5,705 yards for the Girls 12-18.
Barbaree began the final round one shot behind first-round leader DJ Godoy. After a bogey on the opening hole, he rebounded with five straight pars and a birdie on No. 7 to make the turn at even-par. A stretch of four straight pars on holes 10-13 gave him a comfortable lead over his fellow-competitors, Godoy and Max Miller. He would make bogey on No. 14 after missing the green long with his approach shot but birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 (both par-5s) were enough for a two shot victory.
The 14-year old Barbaree is the No. 2 ranked player in the 2017 class according to Junior Golf Scoreboard. His previous best finish was runner-up at last summer's Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship. He also won the AJGA Junior All-Star Invitational last October. The victory earns Barbaree a place in the HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship and Texas Cup Invitational later this year and also four AJGA performance stars.
Byford, a senior who will attend the Air Force Academy in the fall, shot the low round of the tournament, a 3-under par 69, to finish runner-up. Andrew Minton and Max Miller tied for third at 148 with Scott Williams rounding out the top-5 at 149.
Cole Hammer of Houston also captured his first Legends Junior Tour victory with rounds of 75-74. He won the Boys 14 & Under division by five shots over Noah Goodwin of Corinth. Mark Reppe of Dallas finished in third place at 157.
Vanessa Ha of Plano won the Girls 12-18 division going away after rounds of 73-78. This was the first win for Ha since capturing the Girls 14 & Under title at the Lanny Wadkins Junior in 2010. She would go on to win Player of the Year that year.
Tori Ramirez, also of Allen, had her best showing with a runner-up finish. Sadie Englemann, 10, of Austin took home the third place trophy after rounds of 84-81.
The Legends Junior Tour would like to thank the members, staff and committees of The Hills CC for their hospitality and support. They would also like to thank the numerous rules officials for generously donating their time.
The next event on the Legends Junior Tour schedule is the fifth annual Winter Classic at Dallas Athletic Club on February 17-18.
