Castroville's Reed captures Boys State Junior title at Horseshoe Bay
Martinez wins Boys 14 & Under division

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (July 29, 2010) - Curtis Reed shot a final round 3-under par 68 to win the 83rd Texas Boys State Junior Championship. Reed, 18, shot rounds of 69-76-68 to finish at even-par 213.

Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the Texas State Junior Championship featured 264 players (180 boys, 84 girls) across four divisions of play. The Boys 15-18 division played 54-holes on the par-71 Ram Rock course from 6,790 yards while the Boys 14 & Under division played 36-holes on the par-72 Apple Rock course from 6,350 yards.

Reed, 18, jumped out to an early first-round lead on Tuesday after posting a 2-under par 69. His lead was short-lived however as the rain played havoc during his second round. A string of bogeys on his final four holes gave him a second round 76 leaving him three shots behind Benjamin Bankhead entering the final round.

"My goal was to shoot in the 60's [in the final round] and see what happened," said Reed.

He got off to a good start with a birdie on No. 1. He would follow that up with eight straight pars before making bogey on No. 10. A birdie on No. 11 got him back to even-par on the day but after three more pars he was five shots behind leader Roman Robledo, who was playing in the group behind Reed. The tide would turn on No. 15 as Robledo hit his second shot over the green and out of bounds. He would go on to make quadruple bogey and after a three-putt bogey on No. 16 he and Reed were tied for the lead.

Reed hit his tee shot on the 175-yard, par-3 17th hole to two feet and tapped in for birdie. After putting his tee shot in the middle of the fairway, Reed hit his second shot to two feet again. The final birdie put him at even-par with only Robledo left to challenge him.

Robledo was unable to make birdie on No. 17 and after a perfect drive on No. 18 he needed to hole his wedge shot to force a tie. The ball came off the club crisply bounced once on the green and stopped just short of the hole before spinning back 10-feet short of the hole. Robledo converted the birdie putt to finish one shot behind his future University of Houston teammate.

Austin's Dylan Shephard and Brenden Redfern and McKinney's Benjamin Bankhead rounded out the top-5. The Boys 15-18 field was cut to 58 players following Round 2.

This was the first year the Boys & Girls State Junior Championship was held at Horseshoe Bay. Despite the stormy weather the first two days, the pace of play was brisk and the overall satisfaction level was high. The Legends Junior Tour would like to thank the membership and staff of Horseshoe Bay for their tremendous support. In addition, thank you to the numerous college coaches who were in attendance, the volunteers and rules officials who helped make this such a great event.

Martinez Captures Boys 14 & Under State Junior Championship Title
Boys 15-18 to be cut to low 50 and ties following Round 2

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (July 28, 2010) - William Martinez of Austin didn't let the numerous weather delays or difficult golf course stand in his way on his march to a state title. After an opening round even-par 72, Martinez followed that up with a 2-over par 74 to win by four shots over Hideaway's D.J. Godoy and Georgetown's Tyler Ware.

Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the 83rd Texas Boys Junior Championship is being held at Horseshoe Bay's Apple Rock (Boys 14 & Under) and Ram Rock (Boys 15-18) courses. This year's Championship features a field of 180 (36 Boys 14 & Under; 144 Boys 15-18) of the best players from Texas.

Martinez and his fellow competitors, Ben Baxter and Brad Dalke, were one of the few groups who were able to complete their first round on Tuesday. They began their final round at 8:57 AM, and after one delay that lasted one hour, they finished just before the horn sounded stopping play for the second time.

Playing the 6,394 yard Apple Rock course in only 2-over par was no small feat for Martinez. With all of the rain that drenched the area the last three days, the course played much longer than the stated yardage. Despite that, Martinez played steady golf for 36-holes with five birdies and seven bogeys in two days.

With the win, Martinez, 14, earns fully-exempt status in the AJGA's Junior All-star series. He also moves ahead of several players on the Player of the Year points list and gets closer to securing a coveted spot on the Jackie Burke Cup South team.

Godoy and Ware tied for second after both players shot a pair of 75's. Godoy earned the runner-up trophy by virtue of his final round 35 on the back nine. Ware took home the third place trophy. The top-5 was rounded out by McKinney's Brad Dalke (152) and Temple's Andrew Paysee (153).
