Severe weather at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa on Thursday wiped out the last two rounds of the 111th Trans-Miss Amateur presented by TaylorMade-Adidas. The 36-hole leader, Will Zalatoris of Plano, was declared the champion. Zalatoris, 17, in June also won the 2014 Texas Amateur.
Matthew Zampello captured his first LJT victory at the sixth annual Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship. Pierceson Coody won his second event of 2014 after a two-hole playoff against Thomas Critch. Grace Do led wire-to-wire to win her first event also at Gentle Creek Golf Club.
Chandler Phillips turned in a final round score of 2-over 72 for a five-shot victory over Michael Perras. He finished with a three-round total of 8-under-par 202. Phillips joins a list of prestigious winners of the event that includes Jordan Spieth, Cody Gribble and Charlie Holland.
The USGA's new campaign "Play 9" seeks to rally golfers to play nine-hole rounds as a way to fit the game into their busy lifestyles. In addition to promoting nine-hole rounds, "Play 9" encourages other activities like driving range practice and putting.
